Portrait of the 'Zeven Provincien'

This is a ship portrait, viewed from the starboard quarter. On the ship’s tafferel is the lion of the United Provinces, surrounded by the arms of all seven provinces. On either side are two larger lions, supporting the entire coat of arms. Above this is a female figure and the date, 1665. On the upper counter is a shield bearing a lion rampant on crossed anchors, which signifies the Admiralty of the Maas. On the lower counter is a ribbon which is inscribed ‘DE. 7. PROVINCIE’.

This is an offset which is not in reverse and which came from a very detailed drawing which was based on a feint offset. This offset probably came from Willem van de Velde the Younger’s Portrait of the ‘Zeven Provincien’ (PAH5017) which in turn appears to have been traced carefully from a drawing which may have been the first rough sketch.
