To the Kings most Excellent Majesty, This View of the Royal Dock Yard at Deptford... Richd. Paton
Print. For notes see PAH9729, a copy of the 1793 re-issue. Woollet showed an impression of this one as no. 313 at the Society of Artists exhibition of 1775. On 17 February 1775 Horace Walpole also noted that Paton had shown his 'views' of the Royal Dockyards to George III, who had approved them. It is not clear if that meant drawings and perhaps this print as well, or at least some of the paintings. All five paintings (although there is no reccord of a Paton view of Plymouth) are today in the Royal Collection. Earliest inventory record of them is 1842, with the presumption they were either done for or at least bought by George III. In 1776 Paton exhibited the original painting of Deptford at the Royal Academy, stating it was one of a series (of which none of the others were exhibited) but made no claim that it was specifically for the king, though this plate and others in the set are dedicated to him.
