Ancona, view of the port [Vue du Port d'Ancone]

Print, before letter. A view of Ancona on the Adriatic coast of Italy, looking roughly north from above the citadel on the south side of the harbour, which faces approximately west despite the generally north-west to south-east run of the surrounding coastline. It is one of many such port views by Garneray, in this case published by Hocquart, a father and son firm who succeeded the Basset family at 64 Rue St Jacques, Paris, in about 1849. Basset had also published Garneray aquatints so whether this one was originally theirs, later reinscribed by Hocquart (as the case with the copy from which the identification comes), is not yet known. The French title was 'Vue du Port d'Ancone' and if it was first issued by Hocquart then it is a fairly late example of Garneray's work, since he died in 1857. He has exaggerated the vertical scale of the headland and old town in the background and shows a French ship leaving the harbour, with its long mole behind. The square tower between the ship's fore and main masts is a side view of the Arch of Trajan which at this time was a notable feature on the historic mole. Today it is well within land reclaimed as part of the modern development of the port. The print was not engraved by Garneray but the engraver's name is not legible on images so far seen online. This copy is a good quality before-letter proof, previously wrongly identified as of Marseilles. [PvdM 1/22]
