A romanticized reconstruction by John Eckstein, a German artist and portraitist working in London, of the arrival of 'Resolution' and 'Discovery' at the Bay of St Peter and St Paul (Petropavlovsk), Kamchatka, Siberia on 29 April 1779 towards the end of Cook's third voyage. Since Cook had been killed on 14 February 1779, it shows a party of Russian troops and alarmed villagers about to greet Charles Clerke and John Gore, the respective captains landing from the ships, which were in need of repair and supplies before they made their final attempt to seek a northern passage beyond the Bering Strait. The Russians were very helpful, but by the time the ships returned in late August, Clerke had also just died at sea (on the 22nd) of longstanding tuberculosis and was buried at Petropavlovsk. Gore shifted to take over the command of 'Resolution' and James King took over 'Discovery' for the voyage home.
