The Royal Hospital of Greenwich. Reverendo Viro Phillippo Stubbs, ... Prospectum Hunc D.D.D. Jacobus Collins
No.LIV. A high-quality architectural-perspective capriccio of the Hospital buildings from the north, on the axis above the river, but showing no surroundings other than the river itself with shipping. Collins, the engraver, is known to have flourished c. 1713-24, which suggests a median date of about 1720. The Queen Mary Court (not started until 1735) and King William Court are shown in Wren's early configuration as comprising three parallel east-west ranges, not the as-built open courtyards. The image is therefore well out of date by its likely time of publication, since the King William Court was substantially complete by 1707. Wren's western 'base block' of the King Charles Court is mirrored by one on Queen Anne, not as built, and there are various other unexecuted features. There is a long dedicatory Latin inscription to the Reverend Phillip Stubbs (1665-1738) rector of Woolwich and afterwards London Wall, and Archdeacon of St Albans from 1715. PAI5663 is another copy. The Guildhall Collection also has a developed version, with surrounding landscape but the river shipping removed, published by George Bickham in 1749. [PvdM 10/05]
