Portland dockyard 19th May 1945 U-Boats 249, 1023 and 776
While Richard Eurich produced work for the War Artists Asdisory Committee from the beginning of the Second World War, he became a full-time war artist in 1941, and was assigned to the Admiralty. He painted coastal and harbour scenes around Britain, as well as sea actions (although he never went to the front). Eurich had started his career as a draughtsman, but from the 1930s he turned to painting, as his meticulous drawings were deemed detrimental to his eyesight. This rare wartime drawing shows the striking view of three captured German U-boats docked in Portland.
