The steamship 'Teuton'

Ship portrait. This oil painting of the 'Teuton' (launched in 1869) and BHC3528 of the 'Olympus', came into the collection in 1950, though the source is no longer clear. They are both standard late-19th-century broadside ship portraits of 'pierhead-painter' type. The hand is that of a competent British professional who is likely to have done such things for a modest living from sale to masters, owners and others connected with the vessels shown (though where is unknown), in the last quarter of the century. In January 2014 a private British owner informed the Museum that he had another signed version of the 'Teuton', painted in oil on cardboard, and a further example by Hoskins of the RMS 'Douro' (1865). This was sunk in a collision off Cape Finisterre in 1882, with considerable loss of life (and has subsequently been subject to the attentions of deep-water treasure-hunting salvors for the cargo of gold sovereigns she was carrying). The NMM pictures, however, seem to be the only ones recorded in British public collections. [PvdM 1/14]
