The ship 'Troas'
[Updated, February 2021] The ship 'Troas' shown in starboard-broadside view approaching Hong Kong. The harbour is shown on the far right, though it is rather out of proportion with the large size of the ship.
The 'Troas' was built at Sunderland and from 1861 was commanded by Charles Bradley Dasborough. Initially mate in the 'Troas', by 1861 he was its master. It is known to have travelled from Sunderland to Calcutta and back to London between 1862 and 1864 and it was probably on this trip that the painting was commissioned by Captain Dasborough. It is inscribed ‘Ship Troas entering Hong Kong C B Dasborough Comm’.
