St Paul after Shipwreck on Malta, for the Chapel of Greenwich Hospital
See PAI1599 for the print related to this drawing. On 8 July 1786 the Directors of Greenwich Hospital approved this design by West for the altarpiece in the Chapel and commissioned him to paint it for £1200 and within the year. 1789 is the date the Chapel reconstruction (following the fire of 1779) was completed and it came back into use. The finished painting was presumably one of the last items installed. This may be the design approved in 1786 and if so is part of the Greenwich Hospital Collection. If it is in fact dated 1789, as this record suggests, it may relate more directly to production of Bartolozzi's print. [PvdM 4/06]
