HMY Victoria and Albert II
Ship portrait. Oil painting, signed and dated 1875. The ship is shown flying the Royal Standard at the main, the Admiralty flag at the fore, Union at the mizzen and the white ensign astern. It is shown in port broadside view, with Smeaton's Eddystone Lighhthouse and the distant Devon coast visible under the bow. What is probably a coastguard cutter is in bow view under the yacht's stern, with other more distant shipping visible. The yacht's boats are visible hanging outboard on davits along her gunwale: two working boats are in front of the paddle box, with the barge and gig for royal and the captain's use painted rich blue astern of it. For a very similar version, see BHC3690. For a model of the yacht, including the boats, see SLR0813. [PvdM 5/15]
