The Alarm winning the Ladies Challenge Cup at Cowes, Augt 1830

Print related to the oil version by the same artist, BHC4182, but with slight differences (for example, a red flag rather than a Union on the stake-boat, and the topsail half taken-in) so not directly from it. It was one that appeared in his series entitled 'Views of the principal Seats, and Marine and Landscape Scenery in the vicinity of Lymington, Hants, from original Pictures taken on the spot by J. M. Gilbert, Marine Painter'. This was a part publication originally issued in 1832 by R. A. Grove of Lymington in collaboration with different publishers than those shown here (see PAD1106 for details) but of which there appear to be 1838 reissue images, of which this is probably one. Note that the initials 'G.M.' Gilbert in the artist inscription here are an error, though a curious one since Haghe lithographed all these 'Views' (others being correct). Gilbert (1799-1876) himself moved from London to the Lymington area about 1830 and worked there for the rest of his life.

Stuck within album PAI2861 with PAI2862-PAI2888, PAI2890-PAI3061.
