Imperial Japanese Battleship 'Katori' Leaving the Works of the Builders (Vickers, Sons & Maxim Limited)
Print. Probably produced in collaboration with the ship's builders (essentially Armstrong's, Elswick, though the names given vary) at the time of her completion, with her sister ship 'Kashima', in 1906. Both were pre-Dreadnought battleships completed in the year the British 'Dreadnought' superseded them as the dominant type of capital ship, and they were the last two warships built in British yards for the Japanese Imperial fleet. Both returned to Britain in 1921 bringing Crown Prince Hirohito on an official visit, but were scrapped in 1923-25 under the terms of the Washington Treaty. Charles Wyllie was the younger brother of the better-known William Lionel Wyllie, and also a good professional painter. [PvdM 5/18]
