To the Honourable Wellbore Ellis...This Plate is an Exact Stern-View of the Gloriosso...taken by...Russel...Head-View of the Jason, and...that of the Gloire
The scene depicts four naval ships at anchor, with sails furled or hanging to dry, as well as a plethora of smaller sailing vessels, both under sail and hulked, and rowing tenders. On the right is the stern view of the captured Spanish man-of-war Glorioso, flying a British flag. Her name and the date 1740 are carved into her ornate stern. A small British naval sailing vessel is against her port side. In the centre of the image is a port-bow view of the Jason and on her left a starboard-bow view of the Gloire, both French men-of-war, captured by the Royal Navy, and now flying British flags. The ship on the far left of the scene is a stern view, partial depiction, of an unnamed small British naval vessel.
