Official boat badge of HMS Icarus
Boat badge. HMS Icarus 1936. Official design. On a dark blue field, a sun in splendor (silver, grey and red) below, two wings, silver. Pattern approved circa 1935. Shield shape with gold rope twist border, naval crown above. Colours possibly differ from Admiralty Ships' Badges Committee description (sun in splendor proper, wings white). Daedalus and his son Icarus escaped from the labyrinth of Minos, using wings constructed of feathers and wax. Icarus flew too near the sun, the wax melted and he fell to his death in the sea. In name tablet 'ICARUS'. Brass.
