Inscribed: "No. 1. A BRITISH SQUADRON Consisting of HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS, ASTREA, PHOEBE and GALATEA FRIGATES and RACEHORSE SLOOP, under the Command of CAPTAIN CHARLES MARSCH SCHOMBERG, C.B. K.C.T.&S commencing Action with a SQUADRON of FRENCH FRIGATES of the largest Class, under the Command of COMMODORE ROQUEBERT, Officer of the Legion of Honour, on the 20th May 1811, off Madagascar. La Renomee was Captured. La Nereide taken at Tamatave. La Clorinde struck, but escaped during the Night"
On either side of the central inscription are lists of the British and French forces giving the names of the ships, with the numbers of their guns, the size of crews and the names of the commanders.
