S.S. Minniapolis [?sp] with Volturno survivors on board

Signed by artist in graphite below plate. 'Minneapolis' was one of the eleven ships which came to the aid of the cargo liner SS 'Volturno' when it caught fire in heavy seas in the Atlantic on 9 October 1913. They together rescued 520 of those on board, mostly European emigrants heading for New York, although 136 - including many women and children - were previously lost in lifeboats that were launched but overturned before the rescuing ships arrived.
