Rt Honble Edward Lord Hawke K.B. Admiral & Commander in Chief of the Fleet

A bust-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘Rt. Honble. Edward Lord Hawke K.B. Admiral & Commander in Chief of the Fleet.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Ridley sc. / Pub. by I. Gold late Bunney & Gold 103 Shoe Lane 30 June 1802.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley in 1802 after a three-quarter-length oil painting by Francis Cotes, a version of which is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2835). Cotes’s painting was first engraved in 1790 by John Hall (see PAF3450). Ridley’s print was published by Joyce Gold on 30 June 1802 as an illustration in the ‘Naval Chronicle’, volume 7, opposite page 453, where it appeared alongside ‘Biographical Memoirs of the Late Edward Lord Hawke, Admiral of the White Squadron, and Vice-Admiral of Great Britain’ (pp. 453–71).
