Lord Anson

An oval bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered below the image ‘Lord Anson. / Engraved by W. Ridley, from a Painting by Sir Joshua Reynolsd. To face IV. p.61. / Printed for C. Cooke, 17, Paternoster Row.’ This print was engraved by William Ridley. The portrait is derived, in reverse, from Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1753–5, a version of which is now at Shugborough. The print was published by Charles Cooke as an illustration in his edition of Tobias Smollett’s ‘The History of England from the Revolution to the Death of George the Second’ (London: C. Cooke, ca. 1794). First published in 1757–65, Smollett’s ‘History’ was designed as a continuation of David Hume’s ‘History of England, from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688’ (1754–61). (Updated June 2019).
