Fishing smacks by Clamshell Cove on the Island of Staffa with Iona in the distance, 1853

Fielding, a pupil of John Varley, was a prolific exhibitor at the Society of Painters in Watercolours of which he was president from 1831 until his death in 1855. Coastal subjects, in which he could be repetitive in both handling and subject, were one of his specialities. This view of the Island of Staffa, a subject he painted frequently, shows that he could produce work which was both dramatic and atmospheric. It is signed and dated 1853.
