'An Elevated View of The New Docks & Warehouses now constructing on the Isle of Dogs near Limehouse for the reception & accomodation of shipping in the West India Trade...'

An elevated view of the West India Docks showing the scale of the undertaking. The West India Docks were the first enclosed docks of the 19th century. The docks were established by an act of Parliament in 1799 and opened in 1802. They relieved congestion on the River Thames. Ships could discharge cargoes in four days instead of four weeks. The docks closed in 1980.
