Plate I. Of a View of Gibraltar, taken by Henry Aston Barker, from the Devil's Tongue Battery, in September 1804

Hand-coloured. See also PAI7153 for the other part and PAD1649. Barker also produced the view as a circular panorama at the Panorama, Leicester Square, (May 1805-May 1806) following a visit he made to Gibraltar in HMS 'Hydra' in September 1804. A good oil version attributed to Barker (74 x 136 cm) was also lent to the 'Panoramania' exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery, London in 1988 (no. 46). While then thought to predate the print image, it may be a copy by another hand since to date (Dec. 2015) no other oil painting by Barker has emerged to suggest he painted gallery work in oil.
