Portrait of the 'Leiden'
This is a ship portrait, viewed from the starboard quarter. It is a rough offset of the masts and the sails are not pencilled over.
On the tafferel are the Arms of Leiden, supported by two lions. Above are the small arms of Amsterdam, between dolphins. There are two shields on the counter, on the port side a lion rampant and on the starboard side, crossed anchors, symbolising the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
It is an offset, rubbed on the back, possibly in reverse, but worked up correctly on the stern and shown less foreshortened forward. There are some slight pencil additions to the offset of the sails. The drawing has been approximately dated by the watermark.
