Portrait of the 'Agatha'?
This is a ship portrait, viewed from the port quarter. The masts and the fore and main courses have been roughly sketched in. On the tafferel, there is a full-length figure of a woman wearing the dress of the period. Above her, a seated female figure is depicted, flanked by lions. There is a view of a town on the counter.
The ship illustrated here may be the ‘Maagd van Enkhuizen’ but according to a grisaille in the Scheepvaart Museum, she has ‘the Maid’ supporting with her right arm a shield bearing the arms of Enkuizen.
This offset has been rubbed on the back and worked up with untidy pencil and wash. It is considerably less accurate than the other contemporary drawings by van de Velde the. Stylistically, the drawing seems to belong to an earlier period but the subject and watermark suggest a drawing of a later period.
