Portrait of a French two decker

This is a ship portrait viewed from the starboard quarter. The boat depicted here may depict the French Indiaman, ‘St Jean-Baptiste’.

On the tafferel, the crowned arms of France and Navarre are shown, the latter in reverse. There is also an escarbuncle on the tafferel which is impaled with three fleur-de-lis and surrounded by the emblems of the Order of St Michael and St Esprit. Angel supporters are half turned towards each other on either side. Around them there are eight small windows and some vases at the lower corners of the panel. On the rail above, between floral decorations, there is a crudely-drawn figure with one foot raised on a ball and his hand outstretched. There are more figures over the quarter-galleries. Figures on the port side are female while the figures on the starboard side are male. Both wear plumed hats.

The drawing has been carefully traced from an accurate drawing in reverse and has been dated according to its subject.
