Portrait of the 'Merlin'

The ‘Merlin’ was an English gallion-rigged yacht built in 1666 and sold in 1698. The positions of the masts are approximately indicated in this drawing. The vessel is viewed from before the port beam. It is crowded with people, several of whom enter the vessel from much smaller boat on the left. There are five wreathed ports on the broadside and a small quarter badge and a large light by the break of the quarterdeck. The vessel also has a lion figurehead, visible on the far left and floral decoration above the sheer rail.
