The Prince of Orange and Princess Mary going ashore at Ter Heide, 9 December 1677
Van de Velde produced a series of at least 56 drawings of the journey made by the Prince and Princess illustrating various stages of their journey. Most of them are in the Boymans-van-Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. This drawing, numbered 54, completes the sequence of the last nine drawings of the series at the NMM.
This long and narrow drawing depicts the yachts at anchor. The town of Ter Heide (also known as Scheveningen) is visible in the background on the right. In the centre of the composition is the ‘Mary’, viewed from before the starboard beam. The presence of the Prince and Princess on the deck of this ship is made clear by the inscription at the bottom of the drawing which reads: ‘de p verhoont de plaets waer zijn hooght staet met de princes’.
To the right of the ‘Mary’ is the ‘Katherine’, a ship seen from the port quarter and identified by the inscription at the bottom of the drawing: ‘katarijne’. Further right is the ‘Navy’ which is seen from the starboard bow view and marked by the inscription ‘de navij Jacht’ at the bottom of the drawing. On the left of the ‘Mary’ are, from left to right: the ‘Anne’ (inscribed beneath, ‘de Anne’), the ‘Charlotte’ (inscribed ‘de siarlet’), which is perceived from the stern view and still bears the standard at her masthead; the ‘Charles’ (inscribed beneath, ‘de siarles’), the ‘Portsmouth’ (‘de portsmout’) and finally, the sixth-rate ‘Greyhound’ (inscribed ‘de grahont’).
