The Right Honourable Edward Pellew Baron Exmouth...Admiral of the Blue, and Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet...

A bust-length portrait facing to right of Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757–1833) in captain’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Right Honourable Edward Pellew, Baron Exmouth & a Baronet, Knight Commander of the most Honourable Military Order of the Bath and of the Sardinian Order of St Maurice & Lazarus. Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet. From a picture in the possession of Edward Hawke Esq. F.R.S., F.S.A.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Thos. Lawrence Esqr. R.A. / Engraved by C. Turner. / London. Published Octr. 12 1815 by Messrs. Colnaghi & Co. Cockspur Street, Haymarket.’ This print was engraved by Charles Turner in 1815 after Thomas Lawrence’s oil painting of around 1797, which is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (see ZBA0434). As the inscription on the print notes, Lawrence’s painting was owned in the nineteenth century by Edward Hawke Locker, who had been Pellew’s civil secretary from 1804 until 1814. Locker may have been given the portrait at the end of his time in Pellew’s service and probably commissioned this print. Pellew was appointed to the Order of the Bath in January 1815 and the star of the Bath was subsequently added to Lawrence's portrait but it is not included in this print. This mezzotint was published by Colnaghi & Co. on 12 October 1815. (Updated May 2019.)
