Chart of the Nile above Wady-Halfa. To accompany Commander Hammill's Report 1884
Chart No.III.
In 1884 when the British Government decided to send a Relief Expedition to Khartoum to rescue General Gordon and the Egyptian garrison from the Mahdist forces, there were a number of options about the route to take to Khartoum. The Admiralty had been requested to despatch a well-qualified officer to report on the Nile. Commander T. F. Hammill, R.N., was selected for this duty and arrived at Wadi Halfa on 15 May. After three says there, he proceeded to Hannek. He made an exhaustive report on the river between the Second and Third Cataracts. (Information kindly supplied by Mr Michael Stimson, May 2015)
