Richard, First Earl Howe From the original of Gainsborough in The Trinity House, London
A three-quarter-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, holding his sword in his left hand and tucking his right hand in his waistcoat with his hat on a table beside him. He stands in front of a fluted column with a view of the sea on the right. The portrait is framed by a decorative border, which incorporates the sitter’s coat of arms at the top and the title of the print at the bottom: ‘Richard, First Earl Howe OB. 1799 From the Original of Gainsborough in the Trinity House, London.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Engraved by H. Robinson. / John Tallis & Company. London & New York.’ This portrait was engraved by John Henry Robinson after Gainsborough Dupont’s full-length oil painting of 1794 in the Trinity House. The print was published by John Tallis & Co. It is a later reprint, with amended publication line, from the plate originally published by Harding and Lepard in 1832 as an illustration in Edmund Lodge’s ‘Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain’ (London: Harding and Lepard, 1834), volume 12.
