Lord Bridport

An oval bust-length portrait of Alexander Hood (1726–1814) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with the ribbon (mostly hidden under his coat) and star of the Order of the Bath and the Glorious First of June gold chain. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Lord Bridport’, and the production and publication details, ‘Painted by J. F. Abbott Esq. / Engraved by P. Roberts / Published by H.D. Symonds 20 Paternoster Row Feb. 1, 1800.’ This print was engraved by Piercy Roberts after an original painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott and published by Henry Delahoy Symonds on 1 February 1800. Abbott’s oil painting was produced around 1795 and is now in the Yale Centre for British Art. (Updated May 2019.)
