Sr Edward Hawke Knight of the Most Honble Order of the Bath, and Rear Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet
State without publication line. An oval bust-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) wearing the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered in a cartouche beneath the portrait with the title: ‘Sr. Edward Hawke Knight of the Most Honble Order of the Bath and Rear Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty’s Fleet.’ This portrait was published by Robert Baldwin in the ‘London Magazine, or Gentleman’s Monthly Intelligencer’, volume 25 (1756), opposite page 576, alongside a brief biography of the sitter titled ‘Some Account of the Hon. Sir Edward Hawke, Knight of the Bath, Commander in Chief of the Fleet in the Mediterranean’ (p. 576). The portrait is based on an oil painting by George Knapton, which was first engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell around 1747 (see PAF3453). For an impression of this print with the publication line, see PAD2904. (Updated May 2019.)
