A three-quarter-length portrait of George Byng (1663–1733) in a long wig and metal breastplate, holding his sword in his left hand and resting his right arm on a stone plinth beside a baton of command. He stands in front of a tree on the left and a naval engagement on the right. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘George Byng, Viscount Torrington, K. B. First Commissioner of the Admiralty. Presented to Greenwich Hospital by His Majesty King George the Fourth.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Painte by Sir G. Kneller. / Engraved by W. H. Mote. / Fisher, Son & Co. London & Paris.’ This portrait was engraved by William Henry Mote after Godfrey Kneller’s oil painting of 1707–9, which is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2589). Kneller’s portrait was commissioned by Queen Anne and her consort Prince George of Denmark and remained in the Royal Collection until it was presented to Greenwich Hospital by King George IV. This print was published by Fisher, Son and Company. It is a later reprint of the plate originally published by Harding & Lepard as an illustration in E. H. Locker's ‘Memoirs of Celebrated Naval Commanders...’ (1831). (Updated May 2019.)
