An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Richard Earl Howe, Vice Admiral of England &c. &c.’ Also lettered with the production and publication details: ‘European Magazine. / Engraved by Orme, from the Great Picture now on Exhibition. / Published by J. Sewell, 32 Cornhill, London, 1795.’ This portrait was engraved by Daniel Orme after Mather Brown’s history painting of Lord’s Howe on the deck of the ‘Queen Charlotte’ at the Battle of the Glorious First of June (see BHC2740). Orme exhibited Brown’s painting in his print shop on Holles Street and produced an engraving after the work (see PAH7879). This portrait print was published by John Sewell as an illustration in ‘The European Magazine, and London Review’, volume 27 (January–June 1795), opposite page 219, alongside a brief biography of the sitter (pp. 219–20), the text of which is attached to this impression.
