Lord Anson
An oval bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in flag-officer’s full-dress uniform, 1748–67, and a wig. The portrait is framed by swags of drapery and rests on top of a fictive stone plinth, which is lettered ‘Lord Anson.’ Cannonballs are piled at the bottom of the image. Lettered under the image with the engraver’s name, ‘W. Proud Sculp.’ This print was engraved by W. Proud and published as an illustration in ‘An Authentic Journal of the Late Expedition under the Command of Commodore Anson’ (London: C. Whitefield, 1744), opposite page 3. The portrait is derived, in reverse, from Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1753–5, a version of which is now at Shugborough.
