Edward Hawke 1759. Engrav'd for the Grand Mag...
An oval bust-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) wearing a wig and the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. The portrait is surrounded by a thick frame, which features a rostral crown at the top. The frame is lettered with the title ‘Sr. Edward Hawke 1759.’ To the right of the portrait is a palm branch, a traditional symbol of victory, and beneath the portrait is a collection of naval symbols, including a flag, a chart, an anchor, a cannon and shot. Lettered beneath the image with the publication details: ‘Engraved for the Grand Mag. Printed for R. Griffiths, London.’ The portrait is based on an oil painting by George Knapton, which was first engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell around 1747 (see PAF3453). This print was published by Ralph Griffiths in ‘The Grand Magazine of Magazines’. (Updated May 2019.)
