Captn. Faulkner, R.N. European Magazine and London Review For August 1795

An oval bust-length portrait of Robert Faulknor (1763–1795) in captain’s full-dress uniform, 1787–95. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Captn. Faulkner, R. N.’, and the publication details: ‘European Magazine / Drawn by J. Roberts, Portrait Painted to his Royal Highness the D. of Clarence, Engraved by Balston. / Published by J. Sewell, No. 32 Cornhill, Sepr. 1st 1795’. This print was engraved by ‘Balston’ after a portrait by James Roberts, which had previously been engraved by H. D. Gardner in 1795 (see PAF3481). Balston’s print was published by John Sewell. It appeared as an illustration in the ‘European Magazine and London Review’ for August 1795 (vol. 28), alongside ‘An Account of Captain Robert Faulknor’ (pp. 75–76). Note that the sitter’s name is misspelt on this print: the subject of the portrait is Captain Robert Faulknor, who was killed on 5 January 1795 when commanding the ‘Blanche’, 32 guns, in a violent engagement with the French frigate ‘Pique’, 32 guns.
