A half-length portrait of Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757–1833) in captain’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Lord Viscount Exmouth, K.G.C.B. &c. &c. &c. Engraved by Mr Roberts from a fine Portrait by Sir T. Lawrence, For Gifford’s History of the War.’ Also lettered with the publication line: ‘London. Published by W. Lewis, Dec. 7 1816.’ This portrait was engraved by ‘Mr. Roberts’ after Thomas Lawrence’s oil painting of around 1797, which is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (see ZBA0434). The print was published by W. Lewis as illustration in C. H. Gifford’s ‘History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution, from the Commencement of Hostilities in 1792 to the End of the Year 1816’ (London: W. Lewis, 1817), volume 2, page 1714. Lawrence’s painting was owned in the nineteenth century by Edward Hawke Locker, who had been Pellew’s civil secretary from 1804 until 1814. The painting did not originally include the regalia of the Order of the Bath, to which the sitter was appointed in January 1815. The star of the Bath was subsequently added to the painting and appears in this print. (Updated May 2019.)
