Relics of Nelson (on show at Greenwich Hospital)

Mounted on a sheet with PAI8782-PAI8787 and PAI8789-PAI8791. Visitors looking at Nelson's Trafalgar uniform coat (presented to the Hospital in 1845 by Prince Albert), waistcoat and watch, in the special case in which they were originally displayed in the Upper Hall of the Naval Gallery, in the Painted Hall. The case lid was closed and locked at night. The silver engraved label on the inside of the lid is preserved in the NMM as well as the clothes (all Greenwich Hospital Collection).
This is the first of 11 captioned wood engravings of which seven are signed or monogrammed by the engraver, M. Jackson, and all but one attributable to him, which appeared in the Illustrated London News on either 25 March (six), pp. 280-81, or 22 April 1865 (five), pp. 376-77, under the title 'A Visit to Greenwich Hospital'. Accompanying letterpress appeared with the second group of 22 April, starting on p. 375. Page 376 carried a full-side wood-engraving of a general view of the Naval Gallery in the Painted Hall, probably cut by another hand but signed 'L. H. Michael del.'. Michael's drawing for this, with slight differences of figures is PAH4034. Page 377 carried the other five images: 'The Anson Ward, with figurehead of the old ship Centurion'; 'No.15 cabin, Royal Charles Ward'; 'Nelson's hat, snuff-box and stockings'; 'The Smoking-Gallery, Chalk-Walk'. The 'Anson' and 'Chalk-Walk' pictures bear Jackson's monogram. (NB: The NMM has microfilm negative of all the maritime illustrations in the early volumes of the ILN, including these, negs 58/2509 -19.)
