Easter Amusements - The Greenwich Pensioners...(with biographical details on Daniell Ferhall, Henry Stiles, Joseph Burgin, James Connell, George French, Joseph Brown and John Manning)
This is a page from the 'Illustrated London News' of 13 April 1844, p. 233. The Greenwich Pensioners illustrated, reading left to right are: (top) Daniel Fearhall and Henry Stiles (the former a Royal Marine sergeant); (middle) Joseph Burgin, James Connell and George French; (bottom) Joseph Brown and John Manning. All were on 'Victory' at Trafalgar. The text on this page contains substantial detail of their ages and service, though the remainder is lightweight banter weaving in quotes from popular songs and of little other value; the slight overrun onto p. 234 is also insignificant. PAH3296, attributed to Samuel Lane, may be the original drawing for Burgin (though in that he wears an eye-patch), unless the similarity of pose is just a coincidence. See also PAI8794. It is mounted on a sheet with PAI8792-PAI8796.
