Official ship's badge of HMS Benbow
Ship's badge of HMS 'Benbow' 1913. It is an official design, a circular shape with a gold rope twist border, a naval crown above. It depicts a gold harpy on a black field (a mythological creature, half bird and half women.) 'BENBOW' is inscribed on the name tablet. the official design was introduced in 1920. The harpy is taken from the crest of Vice-Admiral John Benbow (1653-1702). The badge is cast from copper alloy, painted and drilled for attachment. HMS 'Benbow', was a battleship, built by Beardmore and launched in 1913. She served at Jutland in 1916 and was sold for breaking up in 1931.
