A panel from the saloon of the SS 'Bessemer', designed by Sir Henry Bessemer and naval architect R.J. Reed. The saloon was balanced on a pivot so it stayed level and prevented sea-sickness. The idea proved impracticable and the saloon found a home at the Horticultural College in Hextable until it was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. The oak panel is carved with cherries, 'BSSC' (Bessemer Steam Ship Co) on a shield in the centre.
