backboard
A backboard awarded as a prize at the Greenwich annual town regatta of 1888. It was won by S.J. Hayes. The backboard is decorated with a view of Greenwich from the Isle of Dogs, flanked by banners and with cherubs holding garlands of flowers. The chairman of the organizing committee’s name is prominent. Edward Spencer Stidolph was an engineer, active in the Greenwich Conservative Club and in local sport. Traditionally the backboard was presented to the winner’s coach but must have been kept by Hayes himself as it was presented to the National Maritime Museum by his descendents
