Forecastle bell
Forecastle bell from the first RMS 'Queen Elizabeth' (1938). 17 and 15/16ths inches in diameter. Incised inscription on waist, on front: 'QUEEN ELIZABETH', and on rear 'PRESENTED [BY] THE CORPORATION OF LLOYDS'. Lettering on the front painted red, that on the rear in black. From the forecastle. cracked from lip to waist, then welded which has caused a horizontal crack in the waist across the weld. It is likely that the welding technique was incorrect in that the bell was not preheated before welding. Handbell type argent with two round holes. Crown screwed in. Soundbow 1 and 5/16 inches thick. Moulding wires from crown 1, 1-0, 1-1. The word 'by' on inscription gone. Cast about 1938.
