Ship's bell
Ship's bell from HMS 'Vanguard' dated to 1794. The bell has a 24 1/4 inch mouth diameter. The inscription band bears in raised characters: '1794' and a broad arrow. The figures of the date were taken from two sizes of stamps. The bell has six canons and argent recessed in a timber deadstock. Square section cast-in crown staple with modern clapper about 1 1/2 inches too short and not striking at the thickest point of soundbow. Lanyard attached to flight. Wires 2, 2-2, 2-2. The bell was cast in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, London. HMS 'Vanguard' was built at Deptford in 1787, so the bell is presumably a replacement made four years before the 'Vanguard' was Nelson's Flagship at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
