Official ship's badge of HMS Renown
Ship's badge of HMS 'Renown' 1916. It is an official design, a circular shape with a gold rope twist border, a naval crown above. 'RENOWN' is inscribed in the name tablet. It depicts on blue field, a torch surrounded by a wreath, all gold. The pattern was approved in December 1919. the badge is cast in copper alloy. painted and drilled for attachment. The classical symbolism combines the torch of fame with the laurel wreath of victory in reference to the ship's name and motto: 'Antiquae Famae Custos' (Guardians of Ancient Renown). HMS 'Renown' was a battlecruiser launched in 1916. She had an active career during the 2nd World War, taking part in the Norwegian campaign and convoy escort duties. At the end of the war she was deployed to the Indian Ocean before being scrapped in 1948.
