House flag, Canada Steamship Lines Ltd

The house flag of Canada Steamship Lines Ltd, Montreal. A red, white and red triband with a vertical black stripe across the centre. The flag is nylon and is machine sewn. A rope and toggle is attached.


Canada Steamship lines first came into existence as Canada Transportation Lines Ltd. The company was incorporated in 1913 after the amalgamation of a number of smaller companies operating in the Great Lakes area of Canada, By 1915 it had added ocean going vessels to its Great Lakes fleet in order to participate in the Atlantic freight business. From 1925 it concentrated on trading in the Great Lakes. From the 1920’s it ran the ‘Great White Fleet’ of cruise ships in this area during the summer months. Today it ships grain, iron ore, gypsum and other bulk cargoes on the Lakes and the St Lawrence waterway. It is a subsidiary of CSL International which specializes specialises in the transport and handling of dry bulk cargo in world markets. (Research: John Scott)
