Sea-bird figurehead (HMS Albatross?)
The full figure of a sea-bird with partly spread wings, crouched as if about to take off, on a small foliate-decorated bow-head; polychrome-painted. File notes assume it is an albatross, which seems reasonably convincing. The size indicates the ship was fairly small and it has been suggested it may come from a 16-gun brig called 'Albatross' built at Portsmouth in 1842, but without proof. It was acquired in 1936. (B&W neg: 1950)
