A full-length figurehead representing the comic actor Joseph Grimaldi possibly from the screw gunboat HMS Clown (1856)

A full-length polychrome figurehead of the famous pantomime clown and comic actor Joseph Grimaldi (1779–1837) probably from the wooden screw gunboat HMS Clown (1856). The prominently carved words on the stempost ‘Here we are again’ was his well-known catchphrase. The figurehead has no arms, although it may originally have been carved with them. He is dressed in red tights with white and black spots, a yellow and read tunic with silver bells, and a fool's cap of green, red and yellow.

He seems to have been the inspiration for the figurehead as it is not a likeness and contemporary illustrations show that the current paint scheme does not match the costumes he wore on stage. The figurehead is thought to have come from HMS Clown, although this is based on information received when it was presented by the Admiralty in 1936 from Devonport Dockyard. A 1911 Admiralty catalogue records it as 'Jester', although this may be a descriptive, as there is no ship of that name in the Royal Navy.
