Official boat badge of HMS Sandwich
The boat badge of HMS 'Sandwich' 1928. An official pattern approved in July 1928. On a field party per pale red and blue, a demi-lion gold conjoined with a ship's stern silver. The design is based on the arms of Sandwich in Kent. The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing an auxiliary. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'SANDWICH' is inscribed on the reverse. HMS 'Sandwich' was a sloop, built by Hawthorn Leslie and launched in 1928. She was based on the China Station until the start of the Second World War. For most of the conflict she was engaged in convoy escort duties in the Atlantic and on the Gibraltar and Freetown routes. In October 1942 she took part in Operation Torch. With 'Erne' and 'Rochester' she sank U-213 on 31 July 1942 in the North Atlantic east of the Azores. She was sold in 1946.
