Official boat badge of HMS Pandora
The boat badge of HMS 'Pandora' 1929. An official design, the pattern approved in 1921. On a black field, a casket red and gold over a key gold. Pandora, the first woman, was given a casket by Jupiter from which she released all the evils which had power to bring about the downfall of man, Hope alone remained inside. The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing an auxiliary. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'PANDORA' is inscribed on the reverse. HMS 'Pandora' was a depot ship purchased in 1924. She was renamed 'Dolphin' in 1924. She sank in 1939 under tow to Blyth for conversion to ablock ship. 'Pandora' was also the name of a submarine launched in 1929. She was sunk by Italian aircraft on 1 April 1942 at Malta.
